Sometimes
People come in and out of your life
Like ocean waves.
Sometimes
Their lives lap gently up
Onto the shores of your life.
Sometimes
They are powerful rolling waves
That inspire you
And touch you deeply,
And then settle into
Gentle consistent waves that comfort you.
Sometimes
The tide is out
And they seem distant,
And other times
The tide is in
And their presence fills you.
All the time
Their lives are an undercurrent of movement
That shifts the sands below your feet,
And you can still feel their lives touching you,
Even when you can’t see them
Before your eyes.
Your life has touched my life
In many ways.
You have been beside me
To hold me up during rough seas,
And for many years you have been
At a distance I can’t see.
Yet even today
I can feel your life shifting the sands
Below my feet,
Because your life is forever intertwined
With my life,
And I can feel the impact of you leaving
Even at this distance.
I think I will hear
Your gentle rolling waves
Forever from yesterday
Even as you say goodbye
From so far away.
