The ultimate road trip is, by my definition, when you pack up your family and move across the country. My family is on the verge our own ultimate road trip from the great Northwest to Franklin, Tennessee. We have been toying with the idea of moving to Tennessee for the past year or more. It has been a “maybe” and an “if” that has transformed into a “when” that even has a date attached to it now.
Many in the Northwest have said they heard rumors that the quickly discarded as unacceptable, but the rumors are true. After school is out and the dance session for the girls ends with the year-end recital we will officially leave the Northwest behind.
But the great thing about it is that the world has been made so much smaller by technology. So many of my close friends live all over the world and we are still able to keep in close contact – I think that takes some of the sadness of goodbye out of this move.
We moved to Portland, Oregon shortly after my mother had a heart attack in 1998 when the shock of realizing her mortality made the distance from Oklahoma unbearable. With her passing that chapter of my life has closed and opened the possibility of a new chapter in a new place.
I’m excited and scared at the same time…but many of the great things in life are just on the other side of the fear we pass through.
