To say that I have moved a lot would be an understatement. I’ve lived in at least 27 different homes over my 44 years. I didn’t count the temporary housing, short-term and transitional housing along the way. Needless to say, I’ve learned a few things about moving, but with this summer’s move I learned my very favorite moving and packing tip that I absolutely must share. Credit goes to Kristie Holmes, the single most organized Dance Mom I have ever met, for this tip.
First, create a master list of rooms in your home for packing. Second, assign each room of your home a different color of duct tape. Third, create a master list for your new home to assign each room.
As you pack each box attach a piece of the assigned duct tape at the top of the box so that it also overlaps onto the side of the box. Make sure you keep a master list of what room belongs to which tape.
When you get to your new home hang a sheet of paper on the door with a piece of the colored duct tape on it. You can stand at the door with a master list directing people to the correct rooms. Once the unloading has been going on for a while everyone will get the system without your direction.
A color coordinated move makes things super-duper simple. I’m hanging onto my collect of duct tape for our upcoming move next summer.
What is your favorite moving tip that you have learned?

That is an amazing tip! (I especially love the Hello Kitty duct tape.) I hope we don’t have to move anytime soon, but I will definitely use this when we do:)

And Hello Kitty really was the duct tape used for my office.

My favorite moving tip is to prioritize boxes and other items so that they go last into the truck and thus, first off the truck. These are the first ones to unpack because they carry the essentials needed right away. They are marked clearly so they’re easy to pull out of the morass of boxes.

I like that idea and will have to borrow it when we move next summer. Thanks!

Great tip! Sure wish I had learned this when I still had six kids in the house! It would have made things sooo much easier! I have to share this…….
Kayla says
Thanks — it sure did make moving super easy this time.

What a super idea, making everything not only easy to find, but also colorful and fun!

This worked great! I just directed boxes as people carried them in the door. When it was time to unpack everything was in the right room.
